Still going

July 31st 2009

This last weekend, we had the first (and hopefully only) mishap of the season. Not the cake, fortunately, but I dropped a beautiful, expensive white porcelain cake platter I’d gotten at The Arbor in downtown Salem. It shattered in a million pieces on the pavers of the Zenith Vineyards patio. Bummer. I raced back to the kitchen and grabbed another platter, this time a nice clear crystal one, which worked out great.

The cake design featured gum paste calla lillies and orchids, plus a wonderful vintage topper. (Sorry, the photo quality is not great). My favorite videographer, Lights in the Attic, shot the wedding. I love seeing friends at cake deliveries.

On Saturday I got to do one of the cakes I was looking forward to all summer, one for Sara Settles and Ryan Howell at BeckenRidge Vineyard in Dallas. Speaking of friends, I got to see Hawley Vining and Jessica Ritter of Wild Pear and Beckenridge event coordinator Arwen Rhodes at that delivery! The cake design was inspired by a cake the bride saw on the TV show Ace of Cakes, though I like to think Myriad did a better job of it.

Here’s the whole cake, plus a detail shot.

I heard from Hawley today that the couple were thrilled with the cake, or rather, with everything about the wedding! I thought the couple was super fun — It was one of those weddings where I wish I’d been invited to stay for the ceremony and reception.settles_olive_detail

More updates

Finally on the crazy weekend, I delivered a wonderful olive paisley cake to a beautiful site WAAAAY past Monmouth. Unfortunately, as I was setting it up, it was drizzling on the outdoor wedding. But the time I was done, it was a genuine rain. Royal icing doesn’t hold up long in rain, I can tell you that. I advise one of the stagers to bring the cake in if it rained much longer. I’m not sure if they did!

The following weekend the delivery for Myriad’s Friday cake was to Shedd, a wide spot in the road south of Corvallis. The venue site was called Holstein Gardens, and I think it was a converted farmhouse with lovely grounds. Since it still was pretty warm outside, I set the cake up inside and it was going to be moved closer to the wedding time. For the record, I almost NEVER allow the cake to be moved after setup, but I made an exception this day.

This cake had a quilting effect, which was fun to do. Later, we added purple orchids.

The next day it was up to Woodburn for a small wedding, then Portland to drop off a shower cake at the trendy Doug Fir and a wedding cake at “Portland’s White House.” That one was a fun, flowery cake in retro colors.

Summer whirlwind

July 31st 2009

So many cakes under the bridge since my last entry….

The biggest weekend was July 10-12, when I did all kinds of crazy things like a wedding with a main cake and 30 individual table cakes. I couldn’t resist taking a photo of all the cakes in the delivery car.

There were a lot of colors in the main cake, and the top tier was gluten-free coconut. Very tasty. Unfortunately, since the wedding, my platter that was underneath has gone missing!

The day before I had done a cake that included a main cake that was mainly foam, 175 cupcakes with ribbon bows and a groom’s cake. Strangely, it was the groom’s cake that got all the attention, even though it was my least favorite part.
