Here I am!

April 28th 2009

Well, after saying I didn’t know if I’d be able to maintain a certain number of posts, I went ahead and fell down on the job of doing just that.

But it’s been a busy month. After that crazy week I wrote about last time (I didn’t even mention the dinner party cake I ended up adding on Sunday that week), things slowed down a bit.

I did a wedding cake at BeckenRidge for Lori Wiles on April 11. I’m including photos here.

But my biggest hurdle this month was The Chair Affair, a charity event on the 23rd in Portland. It raises money for the Community Warehouse. I was asked to provide 400 desserts, and just in case I made 425. They were 425 of the most beautiful petit fours, chocolate-dipped strawberries and cream-filled cupcakes I’ve ever made. Probably THE most beautiful.

And the crowd inhaled them in 20 minutes. People were taking four or five each! Of course, I knew they’d be eaten, but I wanted people to stop and LOOK at them first, maybe appreciate the artistic talent? Seems not.

But I heard great feedback later that the desserts “made the event.” I think I will get some more orders out of it, as a good-looking man insisted he was going to call and order petit fours.

This week I don’t have any orders, which is a good thing, because I am obsessed with thinking about opening a shop in downtown Salem. I have the perfect location, flexible lease rates and a killer business plan (no competitors!) Now, if I only had a guaranteed level of income so I knew I could support my family!

Getting started

April 6th 2009

I suppose I shouldn’t waste time today writing about how this is my first post, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to maintain a decent rate of entries and blah, blah, blah. So I won’t.

Here’s what I’ve got on tap this week: A dozen cupcakes for my friend Jason’s birthday. I have to make masculine cupcakes. What do you suppose that would look like? Jason is getting old, but I don’t tell him that to his face, because he is 6 months younger than I. That’s for Wednesday.

For Thursday I have an order for an 8-inch round Lemon Extraordinaire for my friend and neighbor Mary Jean. That’s not one of my flavors, just the general philosophy for the cake, which is for her book club.

For Friday I THINK I am doing a cake for Bridal Gallery owner Angie Oven. She’s having a trunk show for a wedding jewelry designer and wants a cake. I thought it would be totally cool to make a cake that looked like one of the jewelry items or has elements of jewelry designs on it. Think rhinestones and pearls, etc. on the cake. If that moves forward, I will post photos.

Then for Saturday is a wedding cake. Square, four tiers, going out to BeckenRidge Vineyard, my favorite wedding venue to deliver to. Lori Wiles is the bride. Congratulations Lori and Darien!
